Overdyed Vintage Rugs – The Beginning
100% handmade by expert weavers using only natural, organic materials and dyes, Anatolian rugs had majestic beginnings. They were so highly appreciated and valued that bridegrooms’ families bought them to be presented to the brides’ families as one of the many wedding gifts that were exchanged. Over a period of time, the rugs were wrapped up and kept in storage and removed only on special occasions. This is part of the reason why these rugs have minimal wear and tear and stayed looking good.
It seemed a shame to throw away such beautiful, well-preserved hand-woven rugs, so instead antique rugs (manufactured before the 1920s) and vintage rugs (manufactured between the 1920s and 1970s), were collected to be re-purposed and a new style of rug was born – up-cycled rugs.
A Look At How Rugs Are Up-cycled And Overdyeing
Step 1- Shearing: Anatolian rugs originally had a long pile, which is unsuitable for the distressed look. So the pile is first sheared. The length of the trimmed down pile varies depending on the look to be created. The pile could be sheared right down till it is almost bare or it could be trimmed just a few inches for a fuller look.
Step 2 – Deep washing: This step focuses on washing off the deep colors of the rug while still retaining the lighter shades so in effect the rug looks like a paler version of its former self. If the artisan wishes to remove all of the original color, the rug is put through a bleaching process. This process does not interfere with the pattern outlines however, so that the original patterns still remain on the rug.
Step 3- Dyeing: Now it’s time to infuse the rug with new colors so that it gets a brand new look. The rugs are soaked in boiling water that has dye added to it. The dyes used are sourced from Germany and are of the highest quality for the best effect. The dyer varies the technique and dyeing time for varied effects. A quick dip in one color results in a subdued shade whereas multiple dips results in a deeper shade of the same hue. To achieve a rare color, the rug is dipped in different colors for different durations. Expert dyers know exactly which dye to use and how long to dip the rug to get the color they are looking for.
The rugs are hung to dry after the dyeing process.
